Doug Kouba was selected by the parade committee as the 2014 Leon 4th of July parade Grand Marshall. Kouba was recruited to Leon in January of 1967 to be a Driver’s Education teacher at Central Decatur. He taught this for 8 periods a day for 10 plus years. Kouba later started the first Art program at Central Decatur for 7th through 12th grade. He taught Art for many years following until he became the 7th through 12th grade Principal for two years prior to retiring from Central Decatur.
Kouba is also an active community member as he has held the title of being an elected Mayor of Leon for one term; has held a seat as a council member for 3 terms; currently serves on the Leon Public Library Board; is a member of the Leon Revitalization Committee (LRC); and is the President of the Leon Golf and Country Club Board.
Kouba and his wife Evonne, of 47 years, first moved to Leon because they liked the small town. During their years in Leon, They also feel their family benefitted from the small town environment as Doug feels their children had many opportunities to excel in areas due to the size of the school, believing big schools can have limits. "It’s a good place to raise a family," Doug said.
Doug and Evonne have three adult children: Jill from Des Moines, Brent from West Des Moines and Brian from Ames. They also have seven grandchildren who they enjoy taking care of on occasion and encourage them to participate in the activities Leon provides, including the traditional 4th of July special events.
