On Thursday, January 9, the Leon Chember met at the Leon Golf and Country Club for their annual banquet and Citizen of the Year Celebration. 2012 Citizen of the Year, Rosa Sondag, announced the new Citizen of the Year for 2013:
"Being raised on a dairy farm taught our Citizen of the Year about hard work and dedication. It was this upbringing that allowed them to head off to Iowa State University with two convictions, never marry a farmer and never live in a small town! Our recipient received a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Business and a Master’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies. This education and their previous involvement in 4-H allowed our recipient to touch the lives of many children in our area as a youth field specialist with ISU extension. Low and behold not only did our recipient move to a small town, but she also married a farmer.
Today she can often be found assisting her 4-H club, enjoying time with her daughters Riley and Hadley, promoting the city of Leon, assisting with managing the family farm, running her restaurant From the Ground, and in her spare time she enjoys warm beaches and escaping to the lake! Anyone that has had the opportunity to work with this individual quickly recognizes her dedication and drive! She constantly looks for ways to promote and improve our community, and her husband stated it best, her passion is trying make the lives of those around her better. Between volunteering at her church and with other organizations she spreads her love of the community as far as she can. At this time it is my honor to introduce the 2013 Citizen of the Year – Mrs. Heidi Bell."
